UK steel mill cross travel crane horizontal safety systems - fall restraint

UK Steel Mill Cross Travel Crane Horizontal Safety Systems - Fall Restraint

The Project

To provide a suitable height safety solution for working at height on a Steel Mill Cross Travel Crane, to allow safe working access to the maintenance teams for the cranes. Design compliance to EN795 standard and also the client’s internal safety requirement of BS27 working to fall restraint.

What Rapid Rail Did

A complete package of Structural Calculations, structural steelwork manufacture and installation, to provide five new horizontal lifeline systems, crane height safety, crane gantry lifelines, was proposed to the client to provide a compliant and permanent safe solution to working at height within this Heavy Manufacturing environment.

Results

A permanent fall restraint system was designed and installed utilising new structural steelwork for the system, providing safe access for working at height and fall restraint for up to 6 users on each crane life line at any one time.

UK Steel Mill Long Travel Horizontal Life Line System – Fall Arrest

The Project

Horizontal Safety Systems were required within the Long Travel Bay of a Heavy Operating Steel Mill, to prorizontal Height Safety Systems were required within the Long Travel Bay of a Heavy Operating Steel Mill, to provide safe access to the Installation Team working at height. The team was due to replace the crane rails within the bay, and needed direct access to the crane beam during the maintenance shutdown period.

What Rapid Rail Did

We provided a comprehensive design for the horizontal lifeline system. We supplied the necessary calculations to make allowance for the structural loads, and the additional structure required to facilitate the new system brackets. We installed over 25 columns of new structural steel work and a crane lifeline system of approximately 140 metres per side, comprising Passenger stainless steel wire, brackets and components. This was achieved by safely working from within the confines of the crane to reach the steel structure.

Results

The horizontal lifeline system was safely installed with zero accidents. Also the crane rail installation was successfully completed, working with crane fall arrest lifelines on the crane beam attached to the Horizontal Height Safety System. This is now permanently installed.
